Prior to 2002, I had never walked any further than to the local pub! But in late November 2002, I set off on foot from St Piran’s Oratory,Perranporth, Cornwall on the first stage of a pilgrimage that was to take me to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
Accompanied by my son Tim, I walked for four days, initially north to Padstow, then south to Fowey along the Saints’ Way. Tim & I were very lucky with the weather as despite the time of year, we had clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine. But as soon as we stopped, even for a short rest, we soon felt the effects of winter and the bitter cold drove us on. There was little shelter from the elements.
